We're Active Licking County (WALC) is an initiative started by the Licking County Wellness Coalition to improve the health and wellness of the community's residents by encouraging increased physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Look around our site for information, inspiration, and ideas to help you become more active.

The WOMAN Challenge begins on Mother's Day, May 11, and ends on July 5, 2008.

Increased physical activity has many benefits:
star Cancer Prevention
Studies have shown that regular physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer, and among women, physical activity in adolescence and early adulthood may protect against development of breast cancer.
star Lower Blood Pressure
Participating in aerobic training significantly reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Regular exercise provides the opportunity for individuals to help control their hypertension (high blood pressure).
star Diabetes Prevention
Moderate physical activity such as walking and cycling on trails can protect against developing Type 2 diabetes.
star Enhanced Mental Health
Through aerobic exercise training, walking and cycling on trails can improve symptoms of mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety of a magnitude comparable to that obtained with some pharmacological agent.
star Live Longer
Studies have reported that walking two or more miles a day reduces the chance of premature death by 50%.
